Is Homemade Elemental Diet Good Enough for SIBO? Any Alternatives?

My SIBO has relapsed. MY ND recommended that I try the elemental diet for 2-3 weeks. She prescribed the Integrative Therapeutics Physicians Elemental Diet powder but the larger quantity is back ordered and ordering a ton of the smaller quantity will be a lot more expensive. I have no idea how long it’ll take until they’re back in stock (the site says they’re frequently out of stock). Has anyone tried the homemade Elemental Diet that is on Siebecker’s website (siboinfo.com)? I’m wondering if it’s better just to wait for the other one to be back in stock or if I should just do the homemade one right away (with my ND’s approval, of course). Does anyone have any suggestions?

I wanted to do integrative elemental diet, which I heard tastes the best, but it has too much sugar that I don’t tolerate, so I’m going with homemade, which is also significantly cheaper.

I am also considering the homemade version because it is much cheaper! I am used to paying as much or more on food each week, but paying for 2-3 weeks worth of food up front (or in this case the elemental diet) is much harder on my budget than just buying food each week as needed.

Have you started the diet yet?

I made one drink post colonoscopy yesterday. It went right through me if you know what I mean :-). Will wait couple days before starting again, feel too weak right now.

Integrative Therapeutics is the only one I could tolerate as far as taste is concerned.

Did you try making the homemade version? Does it taste pretty unpleasant? I am not sure I could stand only eating it for 2-3 weeks if it’s really bad!

I never tried the homemade version as everyone who made it said it taste horrible. I tried Vivonex Plus elemental powder, and it tastes awful.

I am planning to do an (organic homemade) chicken broth fast. I will sip it throughout the day for a few days, no food. I might consider broth, maybe for a day or two, after that, I will switch to soups indefinitely.

Great! I hope that works well for you. Does bone broth also help stave off the bacteria as the elemental diet does?

Yes, it does! It can be used instead of the elemental diet. Not bone broth though, more like a whole chicken in the pan stock (boiled three-ish hours). Bone broth (boiled 10 hours) can be a little harsh on the gut at the beginning of treatment.

Oh, interesting, I wonder if I could do this instead of the elemental diet then. I’m sure it would be much more affordable and would probably taste better too. Thanks for letting me know. I’m going to talk to my ND about it.
